Powder Coating Overview
Powder coating (painting) of aluminium is primarily for aesthetic reasons:
• To provide a coloured finish
• To prevent the unsightly (but not damaging) oxidation of the mill finish aluminium in the atmosphere.
Powder coating is known as a 'thick film' coating – generally between 60 and 120 microns thick. Wet paint coatings achieve a film thickness of around 25 microns.
A process called electrostatic application applies the dry paint film to a specially prepared aluminium surface.
Modern powder coating formulations are available in a wide range of colours that have a high degree of gloss and colour retention.
To achieve a high quality powder coat finish, it’s important to start with a smooth metal surface.
For long term durability, use only gentle cleaning products and soft brushes.
